Wiha Werkzeuge GmbH has been awarded the MX Award 2014 in Berlin
There are celebrations going on in the Black Forest. The long-established, family-run company, Wiha Werkzeuge, entered a highly regarded benchmarking competition for the Manufacturing Excellence Award (MX Award) and competed against successful businesses throughout Germany. Wiha has now been announced the winner in the category "Best SME" (the best small and medium-sized enterprise) and crowned as the victor amongst a wide range of well-known competitors. This year the award ceremony of the distinguished prize took place at Axel-Springer-Haus in Berlin on 14th November.
Proud of the achievement and the strong Wiha team
Best SME in Germany: This award is the culmination of a successful business year for the tool manufacturer in the Black Forest. Wilhelm Hahn, executive partner of Wiha, believes that the company is on the right track: "We are extremely proud of this achievement, and of course of our hard-working and motivated team. This award confirms that our process optimisation of the last few years, our strong and competitive in-house production which especially in Germany is characterised by a great depth of manufacturing, are correct and important strategies for Wiha."
Since its formation in 1939, a stable and healthy company has been built up, which due to its continuous process improvements, keen sense for growth drivers and bold use of the most modern manufacturing and logistics concepts, has always fulfilled the current market and customer demands. In addition to an already substantial number of diverse awards in the field of product design, such as the recent "iF product design award" and "Red Dot: Best of the Best" for top design quality and ground-breaking design for one of their latest product innovations, the MX Award now also confirms the perceptible energy and integral quality of the tool specialists.
Committee persuaded by long-standing implemented approaches
A distinguished panel of academics and professionals scrutinised a multitude of applicant companies over several months in a research, analysis and evaluation process. The aim of the process is to identify and spread successful business methods, practices, and procedures. "In Wiha the competitive spirit has always been deep-rooted. Comparison with others, exploring our strengths and weaknesses and drawing positive consequences keeps us alert and strong
compared to our international competitors", said Wilhelm Hahn. Wiha convinced the committee with its complex manufacture and ability to fulfil demanding customer requests with a high flexibility and implementation speed. After a thorough analysis of Wiha's basic situation and its specific challenges and market conditions, they were convinced by Wiha’s problem-solving approaches and practical implementation measures. A Kanban method of production control (from Japan) and the use of lean principles are not just theory at Wiha; they are already systems
that have been implemented successfully and which determine and shape everyday work. Manufacturing and logistics have been consistently scrutinised, tested and evaluated. All "stations" along the so-called value-adding chain were analysed and were potential starting points for change and improvement in streamlining the company and increasing effectiveness and efficiency. The MX Award for "Best SME" reinforces the position of the company, which has approximately 350 employees in Germany, in the top league of medium-sized global players in Germany.
The MX Award and its significance for Wiha
The international subsidiaries of Wiha and the sales and production sites abroad are joining in the celebrations. The MX Award for their German parent company, Wiha Werkzeuge GmbH, also reflects well on them. Optimisations and successful concepts for processes and logistics have already been and will continue to be communicated and implemented as targeted by the MX Award. The benchmarking competition Manufacturing Excellence Award, originally from the United Kingdom which was adopted by Germany in 2004, provides the participating companies
with an opportunity not only for self analysis but also, a measurement of their concepts, procedures and solutions against their competitors. The focused exchange of knowledge and experience helps to identify strong concepts which then can be summarised and developed into new standards applicable in a multitude of industries and business sectors. It thus enables Wiha
and other German manufacturers to maintain and improve their position in a globalised economy.
